Last Night I Had a Horrible Dream

Calling all Flaming Lips fans, or anyone who has knowledge and has seen the film Fearless Freaks (which I enjoyed, even if it was a rather disjointed doc and lacked sufficient coverage of their current tours).

At the end of the film, after they talk about the death of Wayne's dad and give the Fast Times at Ridgemont High update on the cast of characters, they play this great song, with the lyrics:

Last night I had
A horrible dream
But the dogs barking in the morning
Came and chased it all away

Last night I had
A horrible dream
But the sunrise in the morning
Came and burned it all away

Anyway, it's a great song. But I can't identify it. The credits have far too many songs to tag it with and it doesn't appear to be anything previously released. It doesn't match up with anything on the Soft Bulletin Companion boots (which I don't have, but desperately want).

I ripped the song from the DVD, edited out some shrill talking by a local OK television show for your perusal. If you recognize it, or can point me in the right direction for at least a title and some history, it would be greatly appreciated.

It falls firmly into my pocket of obsession with slightly touching songs about not worrying (see Be Not So Fearful). It's a nice song. I just want to hear the rest of it. Or know when it was written. Or what for. Or who plays the banjo.

I know. It's sad that I obsess over this shit. It really is. It's kind of like being Rainman and wearing the wrong underwear.

  1. The words sound SO familiar and I don't know any FL songs. Do you think it's a cover?

  2. This review sounds correct. Do you think?
"A dark, brooding rock ballad, "Last Night I Had a Dream" is a sinewy little tale of fear, paranoia, and suspicion. All the things you want in a pop song, right? Well, with Randy Newman as the songwriter, anything goes. Propelled by a syncopating, minor-key piano riff, it's one of Newman's funkiest compositions ever. By using the dreamscape to convey his motley mood, Newman illustrates fear by using the subconscious as a template. Although Newman calls it "one of the worst records ever," the song is truly a cult favorite among his fans and was one of the more popular songs on his breakout album, Sail Away."

  3. or maybe not. I get the same kinds of obessions and right now I'm still working out the repercussions of a horrible dream that I had 2 weeks ago and caused me to contact someone I hadn't communicated with in almost 15 years. so this is especially interesting.

Damn. Got excited about the Newman connection. But I have that song. Pulled it up. No dice. It almost seemed too hopeful for Randy, anyway. (Though, we did have a Randy Newman song sung at our wedding, so I guess elements of hope can shine through the cynic in him).

Very cool song. Very interesting movie...I saw it at a showing at Webster University this past spring. There are several post regarding the horrible dream song at the flamionglips.com website...

I seem to be missing a lot of good Lips music despite having all of the regular length CD releases.

Kick--the wonderful banjo-epic at the end of FF, that starts with Wayne singing "Last night, I had a terrible dream/But you came in in the morning" I think is the song you're asking about.
No one on this bored has been able to figure out the title. It may or may not be on the 'Mystics' album. It may just remain a soundtrack only song. As of now, it's not located on any 'official' release.

Thanks Carole. If those Lips fans are clueless, then I guess I have no hope. Perhaps they'll release it some day . . . With a name.
