First real SMiLE review up here. It garnered five stars from Rolling Stone which, in its day, would have really been worth something. Now? Not so much. Still, I'm happy to see the work that went into the album, which is apparent upon first listen, is getting its due.
Also, what are Elvis Costello's ten best tracks? Entertainment Weekly says these are. Mostly obvious, some daring.
I'll try and catch you up with this week's events later. It was filled with snot, vomit and nerves. It was great.
I saw BW perform Good Vibrations and Heroes and Villians on the Ellen DeGeneres show Wednesday...brilliant performances.
ReplyDeleteThey were great performances. You can credit Darian Sahanaja for that band sounding as good as they do. He works really hard on charting those songs for the band.
ReplyDeleteBut did you notice how creepy Brian seemed in his happiness? It seemed . . . weird.
Sort of like a personified version of "Happy Days?"
ReplyDeleteI didn't notice it on the EG show...but that song is the one song on Imagination that always led me to believe that Brian still isn't all there. Especially the lines:'No one could help me/Not even my wife' followed so rapidly by the "Happy Days" verses.
C
Well, actually more like a personified version of the "Stepford Wives".
ReplyDeleteAll the interviews for this album are talking about how he is mentally ill. In an active sense. He's been really candid about hearing voices and not really being fully well. Darian has talked about how sometimes he just isn't there at all and other times he's just beaming with happiness.
I guess a decades long, untreated (unless you count snorting cocaine with Denny) mental illness kind of messes with you.
By the way, I like the murmuring voices at the beginning of "Happy Days". Like those ARE the voices he hears. The rest of the song bothers me. It kind of freaks me out.
